Weather Observers Go Subarctic Surfing Atop Mount Washington in New Hampshire

Not a hot take, more like a cold take, Mount Washington in New Hampshire is known for its extreme and erratic weather patterns.

Some of the coldest temperatures ever recorded happened atop that 6,288-foot mother of a mountain.

There's cold and then there's "top of Mount Washington cold," and they are two very different categories.

The fastest wind gust ever recorded on Earth was 231 MPH on Mount Washington in April 1934.

Mount Washington is the tallest peak in the Northeast, and its unique geography and elevation make it the perfect place for experts to study meteorological phenomena. It has been called one of the most challenging environments on the planet.

These challenges are not only fascinating but pose serious threats to visitors and hikers. Visitors can experience temperature swings of more than 50 degrees Fahrenheit in a single day.

How does one dress for something like that? Preparation is of the utmost importance when if you plan to venture into this rugged terrain.

With the wacky, and ever changing weather conditions that happen atop Mount Washington, sometimes the result is a sculpture created by the artist known as Mother Nature.

What is rime ice?

Rime ice is created when fog/clouds, ice and wind all mingle together while the temperature is below freezing.

We have noticed frigid temps and icy roads here on the mainland this week so you can imagine how cold it has been on Mount Washington.

There are unique rime ice formations everywhere, so the weather observers decided to have a little fun and go subarctic surfing!

The Facebook community and myself are a little concerned about the weather observers exposing their bare tootsies in below freezing temps. I know they were just trying to get into character and lean into the surfing theme but for the love of frost bite, put some socks on, people!

They mentioned on the Mount Washington Facebook page that the rime ice wave on the top of their tower hasn't formed in nearly two years. It is rare to see it as big as it is in the photos above. So glad they capitalized on it in such epic fashion!
