Brown’s Lobster Pound Named Most Iconic Seafood Shack in NH

One longtime Seacoast favorite just received some pretty impressive national recognition.

Business Insider recently put together a list of the most iconic seafood shack in every state, and its choice for New Hampshire was Brown’s Lobster Pound in Seabrook.

Brown’s isn’t exactly a newcomer to the New Hampshire seafood scene.

According to the restaurant’s history on their website, the Brown family’s seafood business dates back to the late 1940s. The operation moved to its current location on Route 286 in Seabrook in 1950, and a lunch bar serving fried seafood, lobster rolls and steamed clams was added in 1952.

Today, Brown’s describes itself as family owned and operated since 1950. The restaurant sits along the water with marsh and river views, and you can sit on the outdoor deck too. I would say that it's the kind of casual New England atmosphere that feels especially appropriate during a New Hampshire summer.

As you would expect, seafood is a big part of the menu.

Brown’s serves everything from fried clams, scallops, oysters and shrimp to baked haddock, lobster pie, steamers and, of course, lobster rolls. You can also purchase lobsters and steamers cooked or alive.

I could use some scallops, clams and a lobster roll right about now. Get in my belly!!

One of the traditions Brown’s has maintained over the years is allowing customers to select a lobster from the tanks, have it cooked and cracked, then enjoy it overlooking the water. That experience dates back to the restaurant's early years.

How did Brown’s fit the definition of “iconic”?

Business Insider's nationwide list focused on seafood destinations that have become closely tied to their communities and local seafood traditions. Brown’s represented New Hampshire alongside recognizable New England names including Woodman’s of Essex in Massachusetts and The Clam Shack in Maine.

Considering Brown’s has been serving seafood on the Seacoast for more than 75 years, it's easy to understand why it made the cut.

Sometimes “iconic” doesn't need to mean fancy.

Sometimes it's lobster, fried clams, a picnic table and a New Hampshire sunset.

And apparently, the rest of the country is starting to notice.
