This weekend has a little bit of everything: NASCAR takes over Loudon, Portsmouth turns into Jazz City, dogs get their own festival, butterflies get their own festival, and we're squeezing every possible drop out of the final stretch of New Hampshire summer.

Oh, and I've got a hidden gem restaurant you'll want to check out as well.

NEW HAMPSHIRE WEEKEND EVENTS: August 21-23, 2026

NASCAR Weekend in Loudon, New Hampshire, August 21-23, 2026

This is unquestionably one of the biggest things happening anywhere in New Hampshire this weekend. New Hampshire Motor Speedway hosts three days of racing culminating with the Dollar Tree 301 NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday at 3 p.m.

Friday brings the SIG SAUER Academy Dirt Duels, fireworks and a free Tim Dugger concert; Saturday has Truck Series and Whelen Modified racing; then the Cup cars take over Sunday. New Hampshire Motor Speedway

And yes, general parking is free Friday through Sunday.

After Friday night's dirt racing and approximately 8:45 p.m. fireworks, NASCAR-loving Alabama country singer Tim Dugger hits the Flat Track Stage at NHMS around 9 p.m. New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Country + NASCAR feels pretty appropriate for this particular weekend.

Bark in the Park: Wag Around the World in Concord, New Hampshire, August 21, 2026

Rollins Park basically becomes "Dog New Hampshire" from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Saturday for Bark in the Park. There are K9 demonstrations, adoptable dogs, hundreds of local vendors and makers, food trucks representing different countries, Touch-a-Truck, a huge kids zone, a car show and even a Police vs. Fire kickball game.

Admission is just $5; kids five and under are free, and well-behaved, vaccinated dogs are welcome.

New Hampshire Monarch Festival in Belmont, New Hampshire, August 21, 2026

We're apparently celebrating every living creature in New Hampshire this weekend.

The 14th annual NH Monarch Festival runs 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday at Tioga Pavilion in Belmont with live monarchs, butterfly tagging demonstrations, educational activities, vendors and a butterfly release ceremony.

Here's the fun part: show up dressed as a butterfly, caterpillar or garden creature and admission is FREE. Otherwise, adults are $7, and kids ages 3–12 are $4.

That's a pretty great Saturday with kids.

43rd Annual Seacoast Jazz Festival in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, August 21, 2026

One of the easiest recommendations I've made for this guide is the 43rd Annual Seacoast Jazz Festival.

It's FREE, it's outdoors at Prescott Park, and music runs from noon–6 p.m. Saturday with Yoko Miwa Trio, Soggy Po' Boys, Nick Grondin Group, Kristalis y Las Nenas del Swing and the Seacoast Big Band. Seacoast Jazz Society

And this year the festival has expanded into an entire Portsmouth Jazz Weekend, with additional shows Saturday night and Sunday at The Press Room.

Franconia Notch Recreation Path in Lincoln, New Hampshire

Before summer disappears, do the Notch on two wheels.

The paved Franconia Notch bike path gives you roughly "nine miles of classic White Mountain scenery," connecting many of the places you'd normally just drive past.

Pack lunch and make stops around Echo Lake, Profile Lake, and the Old Man of the Mountain historic site.

Kayak Squam Lake in Holderness, New Hampshire

This is the kind of late-August day we'll be begging for in February.

Put in around Holderness and explore the quieter coves of Squam. Compared with Winnipesaukee, it can feel almost ridiculously peaceful.

Go early, bring lunch, and make the paddle the entire event rather than trying to rush somewhere else afterward. Holderness Harbor has more info

Waterville Valley in New Hampshire

This is my sleeper road trip this week. Visit Waterville Valley

Head up Saturday morning, hike or bike before the afternoon heat, wander Town Square, grab something to eat, rent a boat or hang around Corcoran Pond...

Then don't leave.

Because at 6 p.m. the Dave Ayotte Band starts playing outdoors in Town Square and goes until 9. Waterville Valley Resort

NEW HAMPSHIRE HIDDEN GEM RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK

Visit The Foothills in Center Sandwich, New Hampshire

THIS is what I want from the hidden-gem category. The Foothills Restaurant

It's tucked into tiny Center Sandwich and combines a "restaurant, café, beer-and-wine bar, little specialty grocery and curio shop" in one spot.

It's the sort of place where you can grab breakfast or lunch, wander around Sandwich and immediately wonder why you don't come to this part of New Hampshire more often.

Friday and Saturday, they're open until 9 p.m.; Sunday until 3 p.m.

Final Thoughts

This is one of those weekends where New Hampshire becomes the center of a particular universe, and I think that's worth experiencing.

We're officially running out of summer weekends. Don't waste this one.
