New Hampshire representatives are doing damage control after the civics lesson heard around the world for its incredibly nasty remarks towards fourth graders' continues to go viral.

Rep. Renny Cushing, D-Hampton, is the prime sponsor of House Bill 373, which would establish the red-tailed hawk as the state raptor, according to the Union Leader. The bird has been the center of controversy after it was originally proposed by fourth graders from the Lincoln Ackerman School in Hampton Falls earlier this month.

Rep. Warren Groen, R-Rochester, compared the hawk's hunting abilities to abortion, and the bill was criticized for wasting the time of the representatives. The children were in attendance while their bill was torn to shreds.

House Speaker Shawn Jasper called for an apology, while the rest of the nation slammed the inappropriate comments made.

Cushing said on Wednesday that he wanted children to know that "the legislature is not always mean and cranky." The Senate is also looking to make the red-tailed hawk our state raptor to honor the efforts of the school children.
