The couple, in their 60's had issues with the thin ice of Caanan Street Lake. They were attempting to rescue the family dog.
While multiple days in the 60's have melted ice on most lakes in the southern part of the Granite State, northern sections are still in the process. Tuesday night, a man fell through the ice of Caanan Street Lake while trying to rescue the family dog. According to WMUR News 9, Canaan police said the dog wandered about 75 feet out onto thin ice. While attempting to rescue the dog, the 67-year-old man fell through, too. His 61-year-old wife then tried to reach them by canoe and became trapped.
While they were screaming for help, a neighbor called 911 and first responders arrived shortly afterwards. According to WMUR News 9, rescuers used a sled and personnel wore cold-water survival suits. The man and his dog were in the water for about 45 minutes. Also, they also assisted the woman.
The man was treated for hypothermia, and the dog was taken to the vet.
