NH Man Who Shot Self in Head Alive, Facing Charges in Hampton

The New Hampshire man who shot himself in the head Sunday afternoon after allegedly driving the wrong way on Route 101 in Hampton is still alive and has been identified by police.

Steven J. Haskins, 50, of Franklin, remains in criminal condition.

Haskins will face criminal charges, according to a press release issued by officials at New Hampshire State Police.

Police say that on Sunday at about 4:39 p.m., Haskins nearly hit a fully marked Hampton police vehicle as he headed west in the eastbound lane of Route 101.

The Hampton officer changed direction and followed the vehicle after it turned onto Landing Road.

Haskins went off Landing Road and got stuck in a marsh, according to state police officials.

As Hampton officers stopped, they saw Haskins get out of the stuck vehicle and walking through bushes. The officers heard a single gunshot and found the man with a self-inflicted shot to the head.

Haskins was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

No shots were fired by Hampton police, according to state police officials.

Police officials did not disclose on Tuesday what Haskins will be charged with. All aspects of the investigation remain under investigation, according to a press release.
