NH Police Chief Fired, Walks Home In Underwear
They asked for his uniform immediately. He didn't have spare clothes, and walked away in his skivvies during a snowstorm.
Sometimes dismissals do not go well. However, one New Hampshire community is dealing with one of the most bizarre exits in recent memory. According to the Union Leader, Richard Lee said he was forced to leave Croydon's Town Hall in his underwear Tuesday after the board of selectmen voted to shut down the town’s one-man police department.
Lee broke down the series of events to Union Leader. "I was told that I had to turn over the keys to the cruiser and my uniform immediately. I had no other means of transportation, as the cruiser is a take-home vehicle, and I have no spare clothes in the office, so I did as ordered."
Lee took off down the road wearing boots, and in his underwear. If you remember , Tuesday was also a snowy day. Imagine seeing someone who you believe to be the chief of police walking in his underwear during a snowstorm. Who you going to call?
Lee said his wife eventually picked him up after walking nearly a mile in those conditions. “Someone called my wife... but I probably made it about three quarters of a mile before she got there.”
According to Union Leader, Lee was employed by the town of 700 for about 20 years, was its prosecutor as well as its only police officer.
No word if they'll be an exit interview.
