Prom season is upon us and like most things in 2025, it is expensive! I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when a friend of mine told me that she paid over $300 for her daughter's prom dress. Is that how much prom dresses cost these days? Does a 17-year-old girl need a dress this expensive to wear for just one night and then never wear again?

I wonder if any prom aged ladies are exploring rental options like "Rent the Runway" or "Nuuly". These options didn't exist back when I was going to prom (just a few years ago) but what a great idea! Men rent their tuxes so why shouldn't ladies be able to rent their prom dresses? It's only fair!

No matter which way you slice it, females are spending more on prom than men because we have the hair, makeup, jewelry, nails, spray tan, we're venturing into the mid to high hundreds after it's all said and done. The fellas just need to pay for the boutonniere, corsage, and tux rental and maybe their date's prom ticket if they are feeling chivalrous.

I'll never forget my senior prom dress. It was bright yellow and the contrast between my dress and my orangey spray tan was really a winning combination. Those photos are deep in the archives and will never see the light of day.

It got me thinking, what are the most popular prom dress colors in 2025?

According to Google Trends, the most popular dress color this year in most states is blue. Gals in states like California, New York, Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Tennessee, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire will be rocking blue dresses. The gals of Maine are marching to the beat of their own drum being one of the four states in the country to choose red as their most popular prom dress color.

The prom goers in Maine could be on to something because according to Chinese culture  wearing a red dress to an event is generally considered very auspicious and positive. Red is associated with:

  • Good luck

  • Happiness

  • Prosperity

  • Celebration

We love to see it! No matter what color dress you are rocking, if you have a prom coming up I hope it is an amazing night where you make memories that last lifetime.
