Was it a whale? Others called it a shark. Either way, Higgins Beach in Scarborough had a very interesting character taking up space this morning.

Beachgoers made a wild discover on the popular Maine relaxation spot. At first, people thought it was a decomposed whale. Upon further investigation, it was thought the mysterious carcass was something different.  According to WCSH, Scarborough Animal Control Officer Chris Creps said the bad shape of the carcass made it hard to identify the large creature that was estimated to weigh 500 to 600 lbs, 15 feet long and 4 feet wide.

Reported by WCSH, further review by experts from Marine Mammals of Maine said the carcass was some sort of species of shark and not an actual whale, as some beach-goers had wondered upon discovery.

The Scarborough Public Works Department had been aware of the shark for a few days, as it had been lingering off the coast. They used heavy equipment to remove the shark species and are taking it to a nearby landfill to bury it.
