
Maine Officially Has a Fitting State Dog, and It Is a Cute One
Most states in America have a state flag, a state song, and even a state bird...but not all states have a state dog.
Which, if you ask me, is kind of wrong - all states should probably have a dedicated dog (dogs are the best).
As of last week, only 14 states in the country had a state dog...until April 30, 2025...
State Dog of Maine: Seppala Siberian
Maine just joined the elite list of states to identify a state dog, and it is a very fitting and cute choice.
The Seppala Siberian dog breed was originally bred to be sled dogs.

According to a News Center Maine article, in 1925, the Seppala Siberian Sleddogs delivered lifesaving medicine to a remote town in Alaska during an outbreak of diphtheria (a disease known to suffocate children).
Disney later released a movie called "Togo" that told that true story. Togo, the lead dog in the mission, spent his last years of life in Poland Spring, Maine.
To recognize Togo and his famous musher, Leonhard Seppala, for their efforts and heroic story over 100 years ago, the Seppala Siberian dog breed has become the state dog for Maine.
