Maine is back in the Puppy Bowl for the sixth year!

What is the Puppy Bowl? It's actually the sweetest thing.

The first Puppy Bowl was back on February 6, 2005, opposite Super Bowl XXXIX.  All the puppies featured in the Puppy Bowl are from shelters. The entire show is to raise awareness about adopting pets from shelters and rescuing abandoned animals. And to offer some counter-programming to the constant barrage of football that Sunday.

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is happy to have two of their very own pups in the 2023 Puppy Bowl! Betty will be playing for Team Fluff and Higgins will be playing for Team Ruff. Oh, that's just great! Now I don't know what team to root for! Why couldn't these two be on the same team? I guess Maine wins no matter what team wins! Be sure to catch the Puppy Bowl before the 'big game' on February 12th at 2 PM on Animal Planet!

The Puppy Bowl started as really a joke. Some executives figured that the only way to get people to not watch the actual football Super Bowl would be to point cameras at a bunch of puppies.

It doesn't exactly compete against the Super Bowl. Think of the Puppy Bowl as your adorable friendly animal appetizer as it comes on at 2 in the afternoon!

So, root for Betty and Higgins and Team Fluff and Ruff!

Pro Tip: the Puppy Bowl has already been filmed. According to a 2020 article for Vox, it's shot three months in advance over two days. It has to be. They use 17 cameras and for the two-hour event, they shoot it over two days! So maybe a Maine doggy is already a winner!
