The Arctic Seafloor Is Being Mapped, Thanks To UNH Engineers
(Durham, NH) - A team of engineers and students from the UNH Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping recently deployed a robotic vessel above the Arctic Circle.
The Bathymetric Explorer and Navigator (BEN) was deployed from a NOAA ship and is mapping the seafloor in an effort to improve nautical charts in areas where there is scarce data and increasing vessel traffic.
The vessel was designed by UNH engineers and it's manufacturers, ASV Global Inc of Texas. The robotic operating systems and software were developed by engineers Roland Arsenault and Val Schmidt of UNH.
