The invention of EZ pass is an important one for modern society. Can you imagine having to have quarters on you at all times to pay the toll? I can't remember the last time I saw a quarter! We are living in a digital world and I am a digital girl. EZ pass is a no brainer especially if you commute on a route with tolls.

What is the deal with all of these EZ pass scams?

It feels like this year EZ pass scams are at an all time high. I have been getting more texts that look like the one below than ever. Someone on the New Hamsphire Subreddit group with the user name TellEmGetEm shared this asking if it was a scam:

People in the comments responded with a resounding "YES". The email from Felicita and her Outlook account makes it scream scam like nothing else I've seen before. It's like the scammer wasn't even trying. At least make it look like it came from an EZ pass employee. Lord have mercy.

My rule is I am never going to respond to a text telling me I have a bill due. It might be legitimate! Xfinity texts me sometimes telling me my bill is due. I will never click on a link provided through a text. A legitimate bill will also come in the mail or via email.

How do these scammers get our contact information?

The most common theory is that the scammers send these messages out to a huge list of numbers. Hence why sometimes people who don't even have an EZ Pass account receive them too sometimes. Most likely they just send out a mass text in hopes of getting a few bites.

I have a Massachusetts area code and received a text recently saying I had an outstanding balance on my Massachusetts EZ pass account. I live in New Hampshire and have been a New Hampshire EZ pass account holder for years.

Someone also mentioned in the comments that scammers strategically send out these messages on vacation weeks. They know people will be distracted and have other things going on and will be more likely to click their scammy link! It's evil, pure evil.

This one was shared to the group a few months ago and actually looks legitimate upon first glance.

However, if you look closely you will notice the dollar sign is after the amount. That is not how we list prices here in America. SCAM!

There are so many scammers out there that it might make people skeptical to pay bills that are real. We should all just stop paying our bills until we can get this scam problem under control. Of course I am being facetious. Do not take that advice unless you want your credit to end up in the toilet.

Stay safe out there, my fellow EZ pass drivers. And remember, if you have to ask if it's a scam, it probably is!
