Popular Kittery, Maine, Sandwich Shop Announces Closure
Starting your own business takes a whole lot of courage or "chutzpah", as my people say. In the food business, there is so much behind-the-scenes planning that people don't realize, like finding a space, building the menu, sourcing ingredients, marketing, and hiring staff. And that is all before you can open to the public and start (hopefully) making money!
Two years ago, that's exactly what Nina and Rob did in Kittery, Maine.
Toast specialized in plant-based, nutrient-dense, whole food sandwiches on gluten free sourdough toast. Basically, if you have any allergy or dietary restriction under the sun, you could enjoy the entire menu at Toast stress-free. All of their items were free of dairy, eggs, soy, oils, gums, corn, sugar and nuts.
The response from the community was outstanding! They quickly became a go-to spot for seacoast sandwich enthusiasts. But alas, all good things must come to an end.
The owner, Nina, took to Instagram to announce that T O A S T will be closing its doors. This is not because the business is failing. The shop has thrived and continues to grow. Nina has made the difficult decision to no longer be the face of T O A S T. She assures us that the shop could re-emerge in a different form, and that we might not be bidding farewell to T O A S T for good.
If you would like to enjoy a slice of T O A S T one last time, make sure you get there before their final day, Saturday, April 6.
And while you're there, be sure to let Nina know what a positive impact she and her shop have had on Kittery. I think she already knows, but it never hurts to hear it again.
