Just outside of the White Mountains National Forest sits a town that literally has only two people in it, according to the census of New Hampshire in 2020.  Yes, 2020, not 1720, 1820 or even 1920 - I'm talking just a few years ago.

New Hampshire is Filled Ghost Towns

New Hampshire has several towns and villages that no longer exist, according to whitemountainhistory.org, however, those days are long gone.  There are some physical remains like stonewalls and cemeteries, maybe some old farm equipment, but mostly these small towns and villages are replaced by forests.

The Smallest Town in New Hampshire Consists of Two People

Livermore, New Hampshire in the White Mountains used to have around 200-300 residents, but none of the houses they used to live in remain.  They had a school at one point, a store and a large saw mill, but those things are all gone.

What's left?  2 residents.

This YouTube video shows a good representation of what you can discover in Livermore.  Be warned, this video does contain some profanity.

Livermore was founded in 1876, according to whitemountainhistory.org, by a family from Massachusetts, the Saunders family.  Logging was central to everything in Livermore at the time and had everything the residents would need, from a school, a store, an ice house - everything except a gas station, as there were no cars, only horses.

After a flood destroyed the mill in the 1920's, people started to leave to find somewhere else to set down roots.  By 1951, the town's Charter had been revoked and today, it is, some say, a haunted ghost town.  It sure does look like one.

Livermore is a ghost town, but I think it's only in the truest sense of the term, meaning, there are only two people in the entire town, so there's not a lot of action.  The town is still listed on the tour of haunted road trips, but I think it has more to do with the ruins that still exist.

Livermore, New Hampshire Definitely Has a Creepy Vibe

If you are a historian, writer or artist, I think you would love Livermore.  Let your imagination run wild with all the stories about the town.  What was it like back then?  Who lived in what is now just forest?  Did they have children?  Where are they buried?  The town also has a creepy vibe to it.  As one who likes to hike, I can feel the presence of promise in these woods.

My friend Angela is a University Professor, but she used to be a news reporter. She used to tell me that everything comes back to New Hampshire.  She may be right.  Check out the other historical ties to the Granite State.
