There so much good happening in so many communities during the holiday season, but many of those efforts happen all year long too.

One of the non-profits I am speaking of is The Open Door, based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, but helping so many people in surrounding communities as well.

The Open Door, founded in 1978, is a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt non-profit and community food resource center for low-income residents of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester, Essex, Ipswich, Hamilton, Boxford, Rowley, Topsfield, and Wenham.

This organization provides a basic human need, food.

It's not often they get a celebrity to visit during a Friday afternoon free dinner for the community, but that's what happened in Gloucester last week.

L.A. Law and Mad Men Star

Hollywood actor Harry Hamlin came by to share his new sauce with the Open Door community, invited by his niece Renee Guilbault.  Renee is an Open Door volunteer and an executive chef, according to the Salem News.

Harry's Famous Sauce became popular after an episode of "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills".  It was not long ago Hamlin and Ghildbault created The Open Food Co. to give back to the world in a meaningful way.

Harry is best-known for his role in L.A. Law, as Michael Kusac, and also in Mad Men, and In the Kitchen with Harry Hamlin. Did I mention he was People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 1987?

Roman Style Red Wine Sauce

Hamlin says he learned to make the basic sauce in Rome in the 1980's and then perfected it after he moved to California.

It's a rosemary red wine sauce, so it's a little different than the everyday sauce you buy.  The charity component is the sale of the sauce puts money back into the community, which is always a wonderful thing.

He certainly brightened up many Gloucester residents' day when they recognized him behind the counter serving up spaghetti and meatballs, and Harry's homemade sauce.
