As of December 31st, 2018, the age limit has been raised from 18 to 21.

According to NECN, the age for purchasing tobacco products in the state of Massachusetts has vaulted from eighteen to twenty one. After the House passed the bill by a wide margin, Gov. Charlie Baker then signed a bill imposing the new restrictions in July. However, there are a few exceptions. For example, if you were able to purchase tobacco products legally before Monday, but still not 21, you will still be able to unless in a municipality that has implemented the higher age limit locally. This also includes vaping products.

Raising the age limit locally in Massachusetts isn't an entirely new thing. Fourteen years ago, Needham became the first city in the country to raise its minimum age for tobacco purchases. Since then, at least 194 towns and cities in the state followed.

Mass joins California, Maine, New Jersey, Oregon and Hawaii as states who have raised the limit to 21.
