Fire destroyed a barn at the historic Scamman Farm in Stratham on Monday night.

Nearly two dozen fire companies responded to the three alarm blaze that engulfed the barn on Portsmouth Avenue (Route 108)  around 10:35 p.m. according to the Stratham Fire Department.

"Everyone is safe, our family is safe! Thank you to everyone for the kind words and most importantly Thank you to all of the fire fighters that put themselves on the line to keep everyone safe," the farm wrote on its Facebook page.

Video shown by WHDH TV showed the fire smouldering on Tuesday morning.

Stratham Fire Chief Matt Larrabee said the third alarm was called to bring in tankers of water because there's no hydrants in the immediate area.

"That barn's over 100 years old. That barn contained some chickens, goats and some other pigs and stuff. We released as many animals as we could," Larrabbe told CBS Boston, adding that no one was hurt.

The farm which dates back to 1776 has been owned by former Republican Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives Doug Scamman and his wife Stella since 1972. It has been a chicken farm, apple orchard and dairy farm and is now a hay and pumpkin farm.

There are several barns on the property including a barn built in approximately 1836 as a dairy barn and coverted to a poultry barn, according to the state Department of Natural & Cultural Resources. It was later converted back into a dairy barn.

The farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.

Portsmouth Avenue was closed near the farm until nearly 3 a.m., according to the NH DOT.

The Stratham Fire Department on Tuesday morning did not respond to Seacoast Current's request for more information about the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
