Living in a beach town in Massachusetts, I know what our secret local spots mean to our community.  We have a sense of pride about them, and really don't want to share them with the rest of the world.

In a place where people know one another and tourists haven't found out about these special locations (like a small free beach or exceptional food shack), it's our little gem.

Vacationing on Cape Cod is sheer joy.  If you've never been, try it for a week in the summer, and you will understand the slow, relaxing vibe of the area.

Sometimes, our iconic places get "found out".  When that happens on a national level, the secret gets out, and that unknown gem is "discovered" by thousands of people.

It's bad for the locals, but good for the business, and so it goes.

Case in point, the Sesuit Harbor Café at the North Side Marina in Dennis, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. We've been going there for 20 out of the 25 years it's been serving up seafood, and it is so good.

The fish are fresh, the clam chowder is delightful, and the lobster rolls are loaded with big helping of lobster meat.  Guests can eat "in the rough" at the picnic tables overlooking Sesuit Harbor.  It's stunning.

Imagine my surprise when this iconic seafood shack was featured in the newest edition of Coastal Living.  There goes the "hidden gem" aspect, now that it's not-so-secret.  But that's ok, because word of mouth gossip about how good the Sesuit Harbor Café is was exactly how I found out about it.

If you're on Cape Cod this summer, it's totally worth the trip.
