On the Friends of Hampton Beach Facebook page, there was a post that someone made about a glassblower who people could watch craft his art long ago on the boulevard on Hampton Beach. I remember watching him as a kid. Turns out, his name was Pat Dee, according to newspapers.com.

The Artist Created Beautiful Sculptures

I can remember watching this guy for hours create intricate works of art with glass. According to the newspaper article, Pat said that he had to learn how to paint with glass. If the glass cools off too much, it becomes impossible to work with, so he had to know exactly where he was going with each piece that he placed.

The Artist Learned His Craft as An Apprentice

When Pat was 14 years old, he learned his craft from a glassblower who didn't have a son to pass on his craft to, so Pat got the training in order to keep the craft going.

Pat Trained His Nephew What He Knew

The article goes on to say that Pat had two daughters that were not interested in glassblowing, so he taught he nephew Randy Bouchard of Newburyport. When I looked up Randy, I came across an obituary that may be his, although I can't confirm it.

The Shop Was in Hampton For Decades

The newspaper article was dated May 4, 1974 and in the article, it says that Pat has owned the shop for 21 years, so since 1953? Pat said he used to be on the NBC call list. Whenever they needed a glassblower, they called him. He claimed in the article that he was on the old Steve Allen Tonight show too!
