If you think a few plastic bags there and there isn't a big deal, you should read about a proposed plastic bag ban in York and the reasons behind it.

Yesterday, Seacoast Online covered an issue that may be before voters in the fall. A group called Bring your Own Bag York would like to see far fewer bags used by retailers or perhaps even a total ban on the use of plastic bags.

According to EcoWatch.com, we only use half of all plastic bags more than once. Americans throw away 35 billion water bottles each year. Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the Earth four times.

In my closet at home I've got a huge bag of plastic grocery store bags I use for lunch bags or trash bags, but reading these statistics makes me think twice about using them at all in favor of reusable canvas bags that would be better for the environment.
