Could You Handle Fat Man’s Misery: The Brutal Trail Challenge Hidden in Maine’s Mountains
Warning: Summiting one of the most iconic mountains in Maine requires hikers to squeeze through a narrow, chimney-like cave with iron ladder rungs.
Tumbledown Mountain, Maine
One of the most iconic mountains in Maine is Tumbledown. With just about 2,000 feet of elevation gain, about 5.6 miles in total, and outstanding views, it is a challenging hike with a massive reward.
But getting there requires squeezing through an incredibly narrow chute, using nothing but iron rungs and your own strength.

Fat Man's Missery, Tumbledown Mountain, Maine
Near the top of the anytrail to the summit of Tumbledown is Fat Man's Misery. The cavernous chute is narrow, making it "miserable" for "fat men." Really, it is just a tight squeeze and likely claustrophobic for most.
Although you could bring your leashed dogs to this beautiful summit, it is strongly discouraged on this hike due to Fat Man's Misery cave. You would have to pass the dog up, while balancing on the iron ladder rungs...certainly dangerous.
Here is one of the best videos of Fat Man's Misery. Halfway through the video, you can see a hiker reaching his hand up for assistance. It gives a chilling look down this straight chute.
The most popular trail to summit Tumbledown Mountain is the Tumbledown Mountain Trail - check out the trail info, trail head, parking lot, reviews, and more, here.
