New Hampshire’s Franconia Ridge Loop Named as One of the Best Hikes in the US

If you've ever stood on the Franconia Ridge with the White Mountains stretching out in every direction, this probably won't come as a surprise.

The Franconia Ridge Loop has officially been recognized as one of the "best hikes in the United States" by outdoor adventure website Wyld Peak, earning a spot alongside bucket-list trails from across the country.

Wyld Peak describes Franconia Ridge as "a proper Northeast classic," praising its exposed ridgeline, unforgettable mountain views, and the kind of challenging terrain that reminds hikers the White Mountains demand respect.

"When conditions are right, it is one of the best ridge hikes in the country."

The site also doesn't sugarcoat what makes the hike legendary. Along with incredible scenery comes rapidly changing weather, strong winds, steep terrain, and the reminder that mountain conditions can shift much faster than your confidence. Anyone planning the hike should always check the forecast, carry the proper gear, and know when it's time to turn around.

Why the Franconia Ridge Loop Is So Special

Located in the heart of Franconia Notch State Park, the loop is considered one of New Hampshire's signature hikes.

According to AllTrails, the classic **Mount Lafayette and Franconia Ridge Trail Loop** covers approximately **8.6 miles** with about **3,800 feet of elevation gain**. Most hikers complete it in six to eight hours, making it a full-day adventure that rewards every step with spectacular scenery.

The route typically climbs the Falling Waters Trail, and you pass waterfalls before reaching Little Haystack Mountain. You then spend nearly a mile above the treeline, traversing the famous ridgeline across Mount Lincoln and eventually reaching Mount Lafayette, the highest point on the hike at 5,249 feet. The descent follows the Greenleaf Trail and Old Bridle Path, passing the Appalachian Mountain Club's Greenleaf Hut before finally returning to the trailhead.

It's that long stretch above the trees that makes Franconia Ridge unlike almost anywhere else in the Northeast. We're talking nearly 360-degree views of the White Mountains, and you can see for miles in every direction on a clear day. The ridgeline is part of the Appalachian Trail, so if you want to tackle a part of the AT you can add that layer of significance to your hike.

Is This A Bucket-List Hike?

My answer?  Yuh! There are travel and hiking blogs that say Franconia Ridge one of the most beautiful hikes in the eastern United States. Many experienced hikers say it's the one trail they recommend to anyone looking for the "quintessential White Mountains experience."

This hike is certainly not easy, but that's part of what makes reaching the ridge so rewarding. I still have anxiety from Mount Manadnock and the rocks.  This hike is challenging enough to feel like you accomplished something, yet accessible enough for experienced day hikers who come prepared.

If you're new to New England like me, this is one of those places that quickly shows why people fall in love with the White Mountains.

Just remember: this mountain deserves your respect. Start early, watch the weather carefully, bring extra layers even in the summer, and don't hesitate to turn back if conditions begin to change.

When everything comes together, it's easy to understand why the Franconia Ridge Loop is now being recognized as one of the very best hikes in America.
