Hackmatack Playhouse Opens For The Season Tonight
(Berwick, Maine) - For the 45th year, The Hackmatack Playhouse will present a summer of theatre in the iconic white barn in Berwick, Maine.
The seasons offerings range from "She Loves Me", that opens for it's two week run tonight, to "The Fantasticks" which will close the season in September.
The theatre was founded in 1972 by S. Carlton Guptill on the family farm on Route 4.
Guptill envisioned a summer stock theatre that would showcase the talents of professional and developing thespians from the regional area.
Following the death of Guptill in 1995, a Memorial Fund was established to preserve and improve the historic building and allow the theatre to continue.
Over the years, patrons to the barn have included former President George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara Bush.
