I loved ghost stories as a kid.  Hanging out with friends and you only have the flashlights on pointed up at your face. I loved the campfire ghost stories too. LOL. Did you ever do that?  I'm not scurred!

There’s something about New Hampshire that just feels a little haunted… in a good way though.

Maybe it’s the old buildings. Maybe it’s the fog rolling in off the coast. Or maybe it’s the fact that some of these places have been around since before the country even existed.

Either way, if you’re into ghost stories, or just want a reason to take a slightly creepy road trip, these are five spots around New Hampshire that people still talk about.

Three Chimneys Inn (Durham)
This place dates back to the 1600s, which already feels like a setup for something weird.

Guests have reported footsteps, cold spots, and even sightings of a woman named Hannah who’s said to haunt the property.

The wild part? You can actually book a room here.
So… good luck sleeping.

Madame Sherri’s Castle Ruins (Chesterfield)
This is amazing. If you’ve never been here, picture a random stone staircase just… sitting in the woods.

That’s what’s left of Madame Sherri’s old party mansion, and people say her presence never really left.

Visitors talk about hearing voices, seeing shadows, and just getting that “something’s off” feeling.

It’s cool during the day… and a whole different vibe at dusk.

Isles of Shoals (off Portsmouth)
Out off the Seacoast, this group of islands comes with some serious ghost lore.

Especially around the lighthouse, where people have reported footsteps on empty staircases, doors opening on their own, and things just… moving.

Add in the fog and the isolation, and yeah, this one writes its own scary story.

Alton Town Hall (Alton)
This one’s a little more lowkey, but locals swear by it.

People have reported hearing footsteps when no one’s there, objects moving, and voices echoing through the building.

You know… normal town hall stuff.

Ocean-Born Mary House (Henniker)

This one’s kind of the OG haunted story in New Hampshire.

The legend of “Ocean-Born Mary” includes pirates, buried treasure, and a whole lot of mystery. People say they’ve seen a woman, believed to be Mary, standing in the upstairs window or moving through the house.

Even if you don’t believe in ghosts… it’s one of those places where you definitely look twice.

The vibe

What makes these places interesting isn’t just the ghost stories, it’s that they’re all tied to real history. Old homes, coastal islands, centuries-old buildings…

Even if you’re not into the paranormal, there’s something kind of fun about exploring spots that have a little mystery baked in.

And if you are into it?
Well… my advice is maybe don’t go alone.
