Little Massachusetts Beachside Cafe is a Hidden Gem for Your Next Breakfast
How’s a Salmon Getaway sound with a Jetty on the side? Want to see The Point? Or take a trip to The Lighthouse? Intrigued yet? These are the not just destinations, they’re breakfast items on the menu at a little-known place only the locals talk about.
Sammies, Eggies, and Sweets
This foodie loves the BAT grilled cheese, a dreamy creamy bacon, avocado and tomato melted cheese concoction on Portuguese sweet bread. Menu items are self-described by the very local and care-free categories of sammies (sandwiches), eggies, the good good (main items), sweets, and little sumtin sumthin’ (add on). No, these are not typos, but just the island way of saying it’s a no-fuss, good food kind of place that's not far from NH or Maine.
The biggest surprise though, is the BYOB menu. You can bring your own alcohol, and they provide the mixer for a small fee. Say hello to a Homemade Bloody Mary Mix or Arnold Palmer! The friendly atmosphere spills over into the small house with crazy painted tables and a blue concrete floor.
A Funky Beachside Cafe
You can find the usual breakfast locals on a regular basis breaking bread and drinking the delicious coffee. Just don’t act like a foodie tourist, or you’ll stand out. It’s like the “Cheers” place of PI. My personal favorite are the gluten free pancakes. Good ones are so hard to find, but even gluten free is no problem for this fresh foodie house.
On which island might this self-proclaimed funky beachside cafe with only about 25 or 30 seats be? Plum Island in Newbury, MA . Mad Martha’s Island Café at 51 Northern Blvd has been serving up surprises since 2011. Owners and best friends, Kendall Bowie and Kyree Gerson, put their hearts into serving the local beach community year-round. Currently Mad Martha’s is open Wednesday through Saturday from 7am to 2 pm, but check their Facebook page for pop-up Thursday take out dinners or Sunday Brunch Boxes. You never know what kind of gastro creations these two will dream up. Tacos for breakfast? Yes, please. Oh, and that's one mean crabby patty on a plate.
Try finding Mad Martha’s without a GPS. I bet you'll have a hard time, because it blends in so well with the old beach cottages. That’s ok. Just look for the foodie line down the sidewalk. Get there early! Oh, and Mad Martha's also has a side catering business, too. You’re welcome.
