Even though the New England coastline does occasionally see a hurricane or tropical storm, they are fairly rare.

That being said, we have had to deal with several significant storms over the last few years.  For example, in 2023, we had two significant storms create nastiness along our coast.  And, in 2012, Super Storm Sandy smashed into the coast and caused significant flooding in many inland parts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Given what we have seen over the last few years, there is a good chance that we could see at least one tropical storm or hurricane headed our way in the next six months.

The 2025 Atlantic Hurrican Season started on June 1st and it will continue through November 30th.

Here are the names that the National Hurricane Center has designated for the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

2025 Atlantic Tropical Storm & Hurricane Names

Here are the names that the National Weather Service will use for tropical storms and hurricanes threatening the Atlantic in 2025

If some of the above names sound familiar it is because the names are recycled every six years.  So, the 2023 list will be used again in 2029. The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name for a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. If that occurs, then at an annual meeting by the WMO committee (called primarily to discuss many other issues) the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it. Several names have been retired since the lists were created.
