A Look Inside Castle in the Clouds New Hampshire

Sometimes, these historic spots and museums are one in the same.

This is the case with Castle in the Clouds!

What is Castle in the Clouds?

Located on top of a hill in the small New Hampshire town of Moultonborough, the "castle" is actually a turn of the century mansion.

The attraction's website explains that, in the early 1900s, shoe-industry millionaire Tom Plant turned his attention to the Ossipee Mountains of Moultonborough, New Hampshire, where he and his wife, Olive, created an extraordinary retreat called Lucknow.

Built over the course of just 18 months, in 1913 and 1914, the 6,300-acre estate featured a 16-room mansion, golf course, tennis court, greenhouse, stables, private lake, boathouse and miles of carriage trails.

Lucknow was a remarkable blend of luxury and nature. Designed by Boston architects J. Williams Beal & Sons, the Arts and Crafts mansion featured cutting-edge conveniences for its time, including a central vacuum, refrigeration system and intercom, while natural materials such as Maine white oak, local rhyolite and Conway pink granite helped the massive home blend into its mountain setting. It was a spectacular showcase of early 20th-century wealth, craftsmanship and technology tucked away in the New Hampshire wilderness.

In 1959, the Lucknow estate got a new name, Castle in the Clouds, and opened as a historic tourist attraction.
