New England TJ Maxx Store Announces Permanent Closure
Here in New England, we love our discount stores.
In fact, we have some of the best discount store chains in the nation. Discount retailers like Renys, Ocean State Job Lot, and Marden's are often our go-to stores when we are buying gifts, items for the cupboard, and even for appliances & furniture.
Of course, for those who are always staying fashionable on a budget, the go-to store has got to be TJ Maxx.
The chain, which sells overstock clothing, furniture, jewelry, fragrances, and more was founded by Bernard Cammarata, but the story really begins with Zayre, a now defunct chain of discount department stores. Zayre tried and failed to buy Marshalls, so instead they hired Cammarata, who had been Marshalls’ head of merchandising, and told him to build a competing off price chain. That experiment became TJ Maxx in 1987.
That launch eventually grew into what we now know as The TJX Companies, Inc., which is headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts. TJX Companies currently operates nearly 5,000 stores worldwide, including TJ Maxx in the U.S., TK Maxx in Europe and Australia, plus familiar names like Marshalls, HomeGoods, HomeSense, Sierra, and Winners. Those stores span nine countries and sell everything from clothing and footwear to furniture, beauty products, and housewares.
Which TJ Maxx Stores Are Closing?
According to an article on The Sun US website, a number of TJ Maxx locations will be closing in early 2026.
One of those stores is located in Silver Spring, Maryland. It has been announced that location, which has been around since about 2016, will close on January 3rd.
It was also announced that one of the chain's Boston-area locations will close. The three-story tall store at 360 Newbury Street will also close for the final time on January 3rd, 2026.
Fortunately, there are still several other TJ Maxx locations in the Boston Metro area.
