Mainers have a way with words—not necessarily a good way, but still, a way with words nonetheless.

We toss around phrases that might amuse folks 'from away.' From 'ayuh' to 'upta camp,' our unique vocabulary is something we take pride in.

 

247Tempo recently released an article detailing the most common slang word in every state. When I saw this, I thought I’d be able to guess what the Pine Tree State's is, but nope. Even if you gave me 207 guesses, this one wouldn’t have come to mind.

So, what is Maine's most common slang word?

Apparently, it's the term 'Bazz On.'

Honestly, I've never heard of it before, but it does make sense. 'Bazz on' is like 'buzz on,' meaning that you’re drunk. 247Tempo gave the example, 'Look out for Billy. He’s got a real bazz on.' I can imagine a Mainer saying it for sure, and I’m sure I’ve said it myself. But, is it really the most common or popular in the state?

What does that say about our drinking habits?

This is a term that I've never heard of before, but I'm going to start using it now that I know. I wish that growing up, we had learned about vocabulary like this in Language Arts classes.
