It took firefighters over an hour to bring a duplex fire under control in Newburyport early Saturday morning.

The fire in half of the duplex on Strong Street was first reported by neighbor around 3:40 a.m. The residents were not home at the time, while Newburyport Police helped those inside the other unit get out.

Deputy Fire Chief Barry Salt said the fire traveled up the walls and into the first and second floor ceilings of the building.

Mutual aid was provided by the Amesbury, Newbury, Salisbury, and Seabrook fire departments.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
