The Meredith outdoorsman eclipsed the record, set over 60 years ago.

According to the New Hampshire Fish & Game website, Thomas Knight caught a gigantic lake trout while ice fishing on Big Diamond Pond in West Stewartstown, NH. His fish blew apart the record set back in 1958 by nearly 10 pounds!

After catching the fish on Tuesday, Knight started the process of contacting the right people to ensure his record catch would be properly documented. This culminated with meeting Andy Schafermeyer, a Fisheries Biologist with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. In order to certify a fish’s size as a state record, it must be inspected and verified by a biologist. According to the website, the two men went through the process of measuring the characteristics that would certify this fish as the largest lake trout ever caught in New Hampshire. The fish weighed in at 37.65 pounds

According to Schafermeyer, the fish "is now the largest lake trout caught in all of New England. I’m glad he got it, this couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.”

It was estimated the fish was between 50 and 60 years old
