It’s honestly wild to me that I had never tried maple milk before moving to the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area.

Looking back, I guess uprooting my life right in the middle of maple season turned out to be a pretty sweet accident.

From the very first sip, I felt like I was tasting liquid maple ice cream, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.

The source of this limited-batch goodness is Bohanan Farm, a fifth-generation family farm that’s been operating since 1907.

According to the Concord Monitor, "Jamie and Heather Robertson now run the farm, which was originally purchased by Heather’s great-grandfather, Lester Bohanan. While Heather’s siblings chose different paths, she returned to continue the family legacy alongside Jamie in 1990."

They're also planning to pass on the legacy to their three sons, who have all expressed their love and interest in the family-run business, the newspaper stated.

In 2011, the family launched their own brand in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, called Contoocook Creamery. The creamery serves central and southern New Hampshire and includes selective Hannaford Market locations. Tucked right on the farm is a small self-service store.

Just be prepared to be greeted by the family's three to eight very friendly dogs. (I knew I loved this place!)

Inside, you’ll find their milk (available in both glass and plastic bottles), along with fresh eggs, seasonal vegetables, and locally raised beef. But during maple season, the real star is their maple milk, available for a limited time and made with New Hampshire maple syrup that perfectly captures the taste of spring in New England.

In his Concord Monitor interview, Jamie shared that opening up the farm to the public is about more than just selling products, it’s about transparency.

As he puts it, for the farm to succeed, the cows need to be “happy, healthy, and comfortable”. He continued to say, “We hope this helps people understand how much we respect the animals we raise and how much pride we take in taking care of those animals."

That kind of care and respect for their animals is exactly what keeps customers coming back.

And if you happen to come across Contoocook Creamery’s maple milk, take it from both locals and me: don’t hesitate, just grab it! Honestly, any of their flavors are worth trying, but the maple one? It’s on another level.
