Scroll to the bottom of this article to see actual photos of the plane remains that are still on Mt. Success today.
An estimated 3+ million people visit New Hampshire, most traveling to the White Mountains for the beautiful fall views.
Of those 3 million, hundreds of thousands will hike some kind of mountain to gain an aerial view of the leaves changing.
What if I told you that there was a mountain in New Hampshire where a plane crashed 70 years ago? What if I told you the plane remains are still on that mountain and you can hike to it?
Well there is, and you can.
According to a Scenic NH article, on November 30, 1954, a plane traveling from Boston to Berlin, NH, crashed into the side of Mount Success while experiencing brutal snow squalls, limited visibility, and turbulence during the flight.
The plane's pilot, Peter Carey did an incredible job under the horrendous conditions.
Just before the plane's nose was about to crash directly into the side of Mt. Success, he pulled the plane up, "landing" it on its belly.
Although everyone on board survived the initial crash, two members of the seven-person crew, later died due to injury from the crash. The remaining five survivors had to wait almost three days before being rescued.
Due to poor weather conditions, and because the plane was up a mountain in New Hampshire, it was not until December 2, 1954 that rescuers found the plane and the survivors.
Today the plane crash site remains intact.
You can actually hike this six-mile trail that will lead you to the top of Mount Success and the plane crash site. If you hike to it, please be respectful of the crash site and those who died there 70 years ago.
