If you’ve ever moved to New England, or even just talked to someone from outside the region, you’ve probably had this moment:

They say spring break…
You say April vacation…
And somehow… you’re both talking about the same thing.

So what’s the deal?

Are Spring Break and School Vacation the Same?

Short answer: yes… mostly.

In places like New Hampshire and Maine, what the rest of the country calls spring break is usually split into two parts:

A winter break in February
And a school vacation week in April

Meanwhile, most of the U.S. rolls it all into one spring break sometime in March or early April.

So it’s not that New England kids get more time off… it just feels different because it’s spaced out.

Why Do We Call It “School Vacation”?

Honestly? It’s just a regional thing.

Around here, people rarely say spring break. that phrase tends to bring up images of college trips and beach vacations.

“School vacation” (or “April vacation”) feels more… practical.
More local.
More like: what are we doing with the kids this week?

Why the Timing Feels So Different

April vacation in New England lands right in that weird in-between season:

Ski season is winding down
Summer weather hasn’t arrived
And you’re kind of rolling the dice on what the week will look like

Which is why reactions from parents are… all over the place.

What Parents Are Actually Doing

I asked on Facebook what people are doing with their kids this week, and the answers were very real.

Some are leaning into the slower pace:

“Movie day, play outside, go to the park, cleaning day, arts and crafts day.” – Cecile Rhines

“We will be utilizing the library and maybe some free museums!” – Jennifer Chasse

Others are just embracing the reality of older kids:

“My teens will be entertaining themselves while I’m at work.” – Jessica Marie

“My teenager will most likely hibernate unless they want food then comes out in a blanket cape” – Krissy Lecaroz

And honestly… that one might be the most accurate description of April vacation I’ve heard yet.

For Some, It’s a Travel Week

Of course, if you can swing it, this is when a lot of families get out of town:

“This year we're going to TX to see my oldest son who is military. But typically we do a different state on the East Coast.” – Tracy Haerinck Pohl

“We leave for Tenn/VA late Tuesday night…” – Becky Kowalczyk

“Going on a cruise.” – Melissa Fishburn

Not a bad way to handle a New England April.

And Then… There’s the Honest Take

Not everyone loves the timing of this break:

“I wish we could do away with this vacation… it’s too chilly outside… and with ski season over, not much to do if you can’t travel!” – Lisa Anne

That pretty much sums up the challenge.

The Bottom Line

Spring break… school vacation… April vacation…

Different names, slightly different timing—but at the core, they’re the same thing:
A week off school… and a week for parents to figure it out.

Whether that means:

  • Trips
  • Day adventures
  • Library runs
  • Or just surviving on snacks and movies

It all counts.
