The ‘Best Tourist Attraction’ in Massachusetts is Vastly Overrated

We're very lucky and blessed to live in New England.

With so much to see and discover, you could honestly live your whole life in this region and never run out of things to do. Many tourism and travel websites have shared their thoughts on the area's top destinations, but sometimes, their verdicts leave something to be desired. Take ALOT Travel, for instance.

The website shared this list of the best tourist attractions in all fifty states, including New England. No explanation is given on how these places were selected, but it's promised that they "will definitely give you the best value for your vacation dollars."

Well, this writer has some thoughts on the choice for Massachusetts: Plymouth Rock.

Look, before we go further, please know that yours truly doesn't have a vendetta against Plymouth Rock. Since it marks the spot where the Pilgrims arrived in the "New World" in 1620, it understandably appeals to the history lovers out there. Plus, if you're on a budget, tripsavvy states that the memorial is free and open year-round.

But the problem is that at the end of the day, it's just a rock. And over the years, you've likely heard people say that it's an overrated attraction and not worth the hype.

In this writer's opinion, rather than going to Plymouth Rock exclusively, you should make a day of it by visiting Plimoth Patuxet Museums, a "complex of living history museums" open from spring through the fall. There, you can get up close and personal with a full-scale replica of The Mayflower...

...stroll through a re-created 17th Century English Village...

and visit the Historic Patuxet Homesite to learn more about the area's Indigenous heritage and "the Native peoples who have lived here for over 12,000 years." Now that sounds like a day well-spent.
