These Tubes are Illegal to Use on Lakes in New Hampshire With a Scary Death Rate
Lake living is a way of life for so many people in New Hampshire and New England.
The lake is where you get to relax, have a 10 AM beer, disconnect from the "real world..." and whip your kids around on an inner tube.
Having a parent purposefully try to send a 10-year-old flying off of a tube into Lake Winnipesaukee is a way of life - it builds character...says every New England lake kid everywhere.
But one type of tube has been banned by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers in 31 of its reservoirs in New England and Vermont, according to a Times Argus article.
What are Kite-Tubes?
A kite tube is similar to a regular tube, where a boat pulls a tube by a rope on a lake, pond, ocean, etc.
Regular tubes stay on the water, with the occasional crossing of the wake which could result in the tube being airborne for two seconds. On the other hand, kite tubes are designed to be flown in the air...not dragged on the water's surface.
So as a boat drives, the tube (with kiddos hanging on) will float into the air 10, 15, 20+ feet...
You can imagine how dangerous that fall would be. And one wrong gust of wind could send that tube crashing down, or sent in a different direction.

Are Kite-Tubes Legal in New Hampshire?
Nope.
Back in 2006, two men died from the use of kite tubes, and dozens of others were seriously injured. Including a 14-year-old girl knocked unconscious by a 15-foot plummet into the water.
Typically, boaters will pull friends, family, and kids, on a regular tube going about 15-25 mph.
Kite tubes, however, often require faster speeds of 30-40 mph.
The mixture of speed, and the lack of control of the wind, makes this tube highly unsafe and illegal in New Hampshire's lakes and reservoirs.
