The Associated Press says Maine Audubon, Trout Unlimited and the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife are looking for the volunteer anglers. Maine Audubon says the fish have "significantly declined" throughout their range because of issues such as development and introduction of competing species of fish.

The groups say it's important to get a better understanding of the trout's range. They are asking anglers to survey hundreds of ponds in northern Maine and streams all along the state's coast.
