Wait… say that again?

Alright… I need to talk about something that nobody warned me about when I moved up here. I learned about the Great Wall of Sandwich, New Hampshire and it got me thinking about weird town names. So, I went down the rabbit hole. Searching the internet and thanks to The Granite Post News, I was able to find my fav's.

Because I swear… the first time you start looking at a map up here, it feels like someone just started naming places as a joke and nobody stopped them.

Like… Dummer.

I’m sorry… WHAT? 😂
Imagine casually saying, “Yeah, I’ve got a place up in Dummer this weekend.” There is no way to say that without sounding like you’re either insulting someone… or about to get punched.

And then right down the road… you’ve got Effingham. Which honestly sounds like someone trying to swear politely in front of their grandma.
“Effingham… I forgot my keys.”

Then there’s Sandwich.
A real town. Not lunch. Not a menu item. A whole town.
“Hey where do you live?”
“Oh, Sandwich.”
Cool. Turkey or ham?

And don’t even get me started on Hooksett.
That doesn’t sound like a place… that sounds like something that happens when you cast a fishing line wrong and panic a little or the hookset in my finger and now you need a doctor.

But here’s the thing… once you get past the “wait, that’s real?” moment… you kinda start to love it.

I’m still learning how to say half of them correctly… and I’ll more than likely butcher a few.

It might be time for a roadtrip so I can say that I spent a weekend in Sandwich… drove through Effingham… and made a stop in Dummer.

Dummer... Yep. “I’m heading to Dummer this weekend.” Good luck saying that with a straight face.
Effingham... Sounds like someone trying not to swear on the radio.
Chocorua... Beautiful… but nobody agrees how to pronounce it the first time.
Milan... Looks fancy like Italy… locals say “MY-lan.”
Boscawen... Feels like you sneezed halfway through trying to say it.
Sandwich... Legit town. Not lunch. Home of the Great Wall of Sandwich
Sugar Hill... Sounds like a dessert waiting to happen.
