What Were Those Lights Spotted in the Sky Over New Hampshire & Massachusetts Monday Night?
If you saw something strange in the New England sky this week, you can relax. It’s nothing super weird. Just something a little weird.
While the country loses its mind over Balloonamania (sorry, Deflategate was taken), we were treated to an aerial show provided by SpaceX. If you’re not familiar, that’s a space exploration company run by Elon Musk.
And you’ll know it’s run by Musk when all the stars in the sky had to pay for a blue checkmark.
According to Boston 25, the station was bombarded by pictures sent in by viewers who saw a string of mysterious lights. But as it turns out, they’re just Starlink satellites.
The satellites are designed to provide cellular and internet service, and eventually eliminate cellphone towers. Massachusetts residents should be able to see the lights again tonight, tomorrow, and Thursday.
According to WMUR, New Hampshire residents also spotted the satellites, and will have more opportunities to see them in the coming days.
It’s a good time to own a telescope, binoculars, or just be really, really good at squinting, because there’s a lot going on in the sky over the region.
Comet ZTF is appearing overhead for the first time in 50,000 years.
You can find the comet by looking between the Big Dipper and Little Dipper. A bright moon over the weekend could make it difficult to see without a telescope or high-powered binoculars.
The comet should be fully viewable from February 6 to 22, with the best viewing times coming at dusk before the moon fully rises.
Residents in Maine were also buzzing in the fall over some strange white streaks seen over Kittery. However, there also appears to be an explanation for that as well.
