Pan Am Railways owns and operates the tracks used by freight trains and the Amtrak Downeaster and has determined that the immediate replacement of the rails crossing Central Avenue is necessary to maintain the safety and integrity of the rail corridor.

Because of the length of the rails and the scope of work, the complete closure of Central Ave in both directions is required.

The city will also block off the nearby Fourth Street intersection with Central Avenue.

There will be detours on to Chestnut Street and Pierce Street southbound and Third Street and Broadway northbound, but motorists are reminded that the Broadway bridge has a 9 foot 6 inch height limit.

Commuter bus routes will also be revised during the work.

The avenue is expected to remain closed from Tuesday morning at 7:30 until the work is complete, possibly on Friday.
