A Rare Polio-Like Breakout Is Affecting Massachusetts

Polio in 2018 is on the rise, and it's crept into New England.

According to NECN, Health officials have confirmed two cases of a rare polio-like illness in Massachusetts, and suspect four more. One of the cases is reported to be acute flaccid Myelitis, a serious condition with no specific treatment, according to Department of Public Heath officials. They said one of the cases of was diagnosed in August. According to the report, an exact cause of AFM is unknown, but the Center for Disease Control says it could be the result of a virus, environmental toxins and genetic disorders.

The article states AFM forms as the patient feels a sudden weakness and loss of muscle tone and reflexes in their limbs. Some patients can also experience other symptoms, including a facial droop or weakness, difficulty moving the eyes, difficulty with swallowing or slurred speech or an inability to pass urine.
