I’ve played the window air conditioner game for years.

It’s a mess. You spend a day in spring installing them and then another day yanking out during fall. Also, the two units embedded into the walls draft like crazy, even with recommended insulation.

I recently sat down with Tom from Custom Climates to learn more about the Mitsubishi ductless heating and cooling systems they sell. Unlike systems that rely on ducts, ductless systems place the unit that does the heating and cooling right in the room; several units can be installed throughout a house to heat and cool the whole structure.

Here are 5 things I really appreciate about ductless heating and cooling after talking with Tom:

1) It's more efficient. Experts estimate 20 to 30 percent of the conditioned air leaks out of ducts through poor connections and holes. You don't have to worry about that with a ductless system — and, of course, less waste means smaller monthly bills for you.

2) You have more temperature control. Many people's homes have one zone, but multi-zone systems let you have a little more control. Let's say you love sitting on your three-season porch in the summer but it gets a little toasty. You can crank up the A/C in the unit for that zone without cooling the whole house and possibly leaving some interior rooms a little too chilly. And in the winter, you can keep your bedroom comfortable at night and turn down the other zones to conserve energy.

3) Heat pumps also can dehumidify, too. Think of all the money you spend running a dehumidifier. It can easily add $40 a month to your electric bill if you run one 24 hours a day. The Mitsubishi heat pumps can heat, cool and dehumidify your home more efficiently.

4) Your heating costs will be about half as much as you'd pay for propane or oil.

5) It's really the latest technology in heating and cooling in Europe and now the United States, with today's models offering technology far beyond what was available 10 to 15 years ago. Mitsubishi heat pumps can deliver heat to your home when outside temps are as low as minus 13 degrees.

After spending time with Tom at Custom Climates, I'd trust them with my own heating and cooling projects. They really know their stuff: They are experts in heat pumps and ductless heating systems and earned elite Mitsubishi dealer status in light of the extra training their techs have received.
