Do You “Remember The Maine”?
(Dover, NH) - It was 120 years ago yesterday...February 15, 1898...that the American warship exploded in Havana Harbor in Cuba.
The sinking was blamed on Spain. "Remember the Maine! To Hell With Spain" became the rally phrase that eventually led to the Spanish American War that lasted from April until August of 1898.
The actual cause of the blast was never determined, but researchers believe it may have actually been accidental.
A plaque attached to a statue in front of Dover City Hall memorializes the 260 sailors who died in the explosion and sinking of the battleship. Metal recovered from the Maine was used to create the plaque.
