Ever Been Snowshoeing? You Can Try It for Free at This Maine Ski Mountain
If you listen to our show, you may have heard me mention that I am learning how to ski in my 30's, and it is quite the journey. There is nothing like having 4-year-olds ski circles around you on the bunny hill and ask "are you okay, ma'am?" when you are on your booty most of the time. It's hilarious and demoralizing at the same time.
I am most likely going to live in New England for the long haul, and it's important to me that I have something to look forward to during the winter months. Alas, I grew up in a family that is not so into winter sports (we're theater people, we enjoy indoor activities), so I had no choice but to learn a little later in life.
Snowshoeing is something I have always wanted to try. It sounds (a lot) more relaxing than skiing, because you don't have that fear of breaking a bone or crashing into a tree at any given moment.
A big deterrent for many people to try winter sports can be the cost. After passes, rentals, lodging, food, and gas to get there, all of a sudden you have a very expensive new hobby on your hands. This is why I love what Black Mountain in Rumford, Maine, is doing. All winter long, you can try snowshoeing for free. All you have to do is pick up a ticket at their ticket office & your equipment in the rental shop any time on Thursdays-Sundays from 9am-4pm. The folks at L.L Bean are making it all happen. Hit up their website for more info.
If you are in the same boat as me when it comes to skiing, these are the New England mountains for you:
