Is there any nutritional value in these sweets? There can be if you chose wisely, read the labels, and understand how too much sugar and artificial color can affect the young ones, and the older kids too.
When looking at the main ingredient of sweets, check the first ingredient. That is what the product is mostly made of.
One way to curb the sugar is to buy sugar-free confections. In fact, some of your trick or treaters may have a peanut allergy, or suffer from diabetes. Having options for them is memorable for their experience.
As for the healthiest candy in New Hampshire, according to usatoday.com, there are a few candies which stand out.
Peanuts coupled with chocolate is not only the hands-down favorite, but those candies tend to be a smidge healthier, with the best being Peanut M&M's, and then peanut butter cups (Reese's is first choice), and then Snickers bars are a hot third place.
All of these sweets have peanuts and chocolate layers, but still not that much protein.
If you are watching out to present healthier options for the holiday, try the fun size versions, or home-made popcorn, cookies, or item which are not food.
Enjoy, but monitor what you and your children are eating. It's all about moderation.
