I know, I know.  You might not agree to completely give up your pumpkin spice latte this fall, but there is another alternative that's healthier and well, better for you.

The rise of the pumpkin spice latte was escalated by Starbucks, makers of the famous drink first introduced in 2003.  Now 21 years old, and still going strong, PSL (as enthusiasts call it) has taken on a life of its own.

However good it is (and it is), it contains high grams of sugar and can add more muffin to your muffin top.

Let's consider the health properties of a turmeric latte.  Another name for the drink is Golden Milk, and it's been around for centuries, born in India and known in the healing arts circles.

What's in a turmeric latte?  Good stuff like cinnamon, cardamon, ginger, pepper, a little coconut oil and turmeric, which gives it its golden color.

While Starbucks does offer a latte with turmeric, it's hot milk with the spices, poured over espresso.

In a true turmeric latte, there is no caffeine, just calming spices and milk. The medicinal plants used are a positive for your health.  Local coffee shops on the Seacoast and inland can make this for you without the caffeine.

Coffeeness.com gives us a simple recipe to make Golden Milk, and it will feel like a better lifestyle choice once you try the savory, and sweet taste.  The flavor of fresh grated turmeric root and fresh ginger alone will make you love this warm drink.

Turmeric Latte (Golden Milk)

11 ounces (330 milliliters) almond milk (cow’s milk or another non-dairy milk also works)

1 teaspoon turmeric powder or grated turmeric root

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 walnut-sized piece of ginger

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon coconut oil (or other vegetable fat)

A pinch of nutmeg

Dates, honey, rice syrup, agave syrup or sugar to sweeten (amount as desired)

I prefer local honey in my latte, but the choice is yours.  Enjoy.
