This Library in Maine Doubles as an Animal Shelter
I love a public library! I always have ever since I was a wee lass. My mom would take me to the library as a reward for good behavior. If I got a great report card or I absolutely slayed in my dance recital, it's off to the library we went. That is just the most wholesome thing now that I look back on it. As I got older, I would ask to be taken to Strawberries so I could buy the new TLC CD but when I was in kindergarten through third grade, the library was the place to be.
The Kennebunk Public Library in Maine had a brilliant idea that is proving to be simultaneously beneficial to tons library goers and a local animal shelter. They partnered with the Animal Welfare Society and have adoptable cats roaming around for visitors to snuggle and take home if they are so inclined! People come in hoping to check out "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" for their book club and they end up leaving with a new feline companion!
It is honestly so smart because the cats have so much space to roam free and have a safe space to showcase their personalities far more than they would be able to at a shelter. It's really a win win!
According to News Center Maine, the library has fostered well over 30 cats and most have been adopted within one or two weeks. None have been returned to the shelter. The record for the fastest adoption is two hours after arrival.
Allison Atkins is the assistant Library Director and she said something very simple, yet very profound" "Books and cats are just a cozy combo," I couldn't agree more!
