The Oldest State Library in the USA is in New Hampshire and Full of History
New Hampshire is sometimes an afterthought when discussing America's history.
I mean, Massachusetts obviously has some of the richest history in the USA, but so does the Granite State.
The Oldest State Library in the USA:
The New Hampshire State Library in Concord, New Hampshire, is a beauty. According to an NHPR article, it is the oldest state library in the United States
The state library in New Hampshire's capital was founded in 1717 with only two books - that was over 308 years ago.
Although it was founded in 1717, the library underwent changes in 1896; however, most of the construction today is the same as it was in 1896.
Oldest Book in the New Hampshire State Library:
While there is no "official oldest book" there is something way cooler inside of the NH State Library - first edition maps of New Hampshire from 1826.
The "Map Room" houses many maps like the Hitchcock Map - a 20-foot tall map of New Hampshire carved by students at Dartmouth College in 1877.
I bet you did not know libraries could be that cool...
