New England may look just a little bit less like Christmas this year, but two cities in the Seacoast area are already being singled out for being among the best Christmas cities in the country.

The website House Beautiful gave shout outs to 26 cities in the U.S. for being the “Most Festive Christmas Towns.” At number four: Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

According to the list:

“As one of the oldest towns in the country, Portsmouth is a charming New England destination that celebrates the holidays in style with a Vintage Christmas Celebration. Visit the historic village of Strawberry Banke Museum, or wander around the charming shopping districts in this historic town.”

While you’re visiting Portsmouth, it’s also worth checking out nearby activities like the massive gingerbread houses in Newcastle.

Also getting praise was Kennebunkport, Maine. Per the list:

"During Kennebunkport's annual Christmas Prelude, the town offers a very New England celebration. You can watch Santa Claus arrive by lobster boat, go on seashore holiday trolley rides, and enjoy wine tastings and lobster bakes. Not to mention, the town is covered in Christmas lights and garland that make it the perfect festive photo backdrop."

Other New England cities included were Mystic, Connecticut…

“From an illuminated boat parade to a holiday carnival, Mystic offers everything you could want from a charming coastal village come Christmastime.”

Stockbridge, Massachusetts…

“Established in 1773 as a stage coach stop, this is one town that's picture-perfect all winter long.”

Woodstock, Vermont…

“You'll find a parade of horses and buggies, carolers, and historic homes and farms.”

and Boothbay, Maine…

“You'll…find New England's biggest light display (more than 750,000 lights!) at Gardens Aglow.”
